China—having surpassed the U.S. in app downloads in 2015—is expected to outpace the states in terms of total revenue in the first half of 2016.
Gross revenue across all app stores will surpass the $100 billion mark globally, by 2020.
Growth is driven by both steady mature markets as well as fast-growth emerging markets. Danielle Levitas, the SVP of research & analysis at App Annie explains, “While large markets including United States, Japan and China are central to overall app revenue growth, we see tremendous opportunity in fast-growing markets from India and Indonesia to Mexico and Argentina,”
Google Play and 3rd party Android stores will experience strong growth, and is expected to reach a combined revenue of $55.7 billion in 2020—a projected growth of 300% from 2015.
Google Play’s growth is attributed to the rapid adoption rate of smartphones in emerging markets like India, Mexico, Brazil and Indonesia.
However, Apple’s iOS App Store is expected to remain the highest earning app store through 2020 and is estimated to reach $44.8 billion.
